The United States House of Representatives made a historic move by officially commencing a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, citing concerns about his family’s prior business dealings.

These proceedings unfolded in the lead-up to the highly anticipated 2024 election.

Kevin McCarthy, serving as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, asserted that the House Oversight Committee’s ongoing investigation had uncovered what he characterized as a “pervasive culture of corruption” associated with the Biden family.

The Republican Party had been diligently probing the business activities of Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, which transpired before the current President assumed office.

McCarthy stated emphatically, “These allegations encompass potential abuses of power, obstruction of justice, and allegations of corruption that, in our view, necessitate thorough examination by the House of Representatives. Consequently, I am officially instructing our House committee to initiate a formal impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.”

This significant announcement came at a time when McCarthy was under mounting pressure from conservative factions within his party to take decisive action against Biden. Simultaneously, he grappled with the challenges of passing crucial legislation to prevent a potential government shutdown by month’s end.

In response to these developments, the Biden administration promptly dismissed the impeachment proceedings as politically motivated. White House spokesman Ian Sams remarked, “Speaker McCarthy should not succumb to the demands of the extreme far-right wing, who have threatened to force a government shutdown unless they secure an unwarranted, evidence-deficient impeachment of President Biden. The consequences for the American people are far too grave.”

House Republicans continued their investigation into Hunter Biden’s business affairs, yet had not produced conclusive evidence directly linking him to the President. They had presented a few instances, mainly from Joe Biden’s tenure as Vice President during the Obama administration, where he had communicated with his son or attended dinners hosted by Hunter Biden alongside business associates.

Representative James Comer, the Republican chairman overseeing the Oversight Committee, expanded the scope of the investigation to delve deeper into the financial aspects of the Biden family. It was anticipated that he would seek access to Hunter Biden’s banking records as part of the committee’s efforts to trace financial transactions.

In a related move, Comer had recently issued a demand for the State Department to provide documents pertaining to Joe Biden’s activities as Vice President during the Obama era aimed at combating corruption in Ukraine. This request aimed to gain insight into the State Department’s stance regarding Viktor Shokin, a former Ukrainian prosecutor whom Biden, alongside many Western allies, sought to have removed from office due to corruption allegations.

The White House remained steadfast in its position that President Biden had not been involved in his son’s business affairs. Meanwhile, Democratic members of the Oversight Committee geared up to counter what they regarded as unsubstantiated accusations.
