A 43-year-old teacher, David Yusuf, has been arraigned in a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly assaulting a student of the Government Girls College, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The defendant, who is reported to be a casual staff member at the college, is facing two counts of causing grievous harm without provocation and assault.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the police prosecutor, Edwin Inegbenoise, the case was transferred from the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters to the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT, for further investigation.

The complaint was filed by Henry Iortim, a resident of Union Homes Estate, Kuje, who alleged that his 16-year-old daughter, a student at the college, was assaulted by the defendant on June 2.

During the night prep session, the defendant is alleged to have used an iron rod to inflict injuries on the victim’s palm and other parts of her body.

The charges against the defendant are in violation of sections 241 and 326 of the Penal Code. Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in a similar amount, both of whom must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. The addresses of the sureties will be verified by the court’s registrar before the defendant can be released.
