The Senate on Tuesday held a valedictory session to honor the late Senator Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed away on July 26, 2024, during a holiday in London. The session was marked by glowing tributes from Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other senators, celebrating the life and legacy of the former representative of Anambra South Senatorial District.

Senator Ubah, who served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), was eulogized for his dedication, philanthropy, and political acumen.

His casket was placed in the foyer of the White House Wing of the National Assembly Complex, where it laid in state throughout the session.

The session began with a motion moved by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC – Ekiti Central), stating: “That the Senate do now pay tributes in honor of late Senator Ubah, Patrick Ifeanyi (Anambra South) (3rd September 1971 – 26th July 2024).”

The event was attended by Senator Ubah’s wife, children, and close relatives, as well as friends and political leaders from Anambra State, including Senator Chris Ngige. Members of the House of Representatives from the South East and other states, alongside the wives of senators and principal officers, led by Mrs. Nnoma Akpabio, were also present.

Vice President Shettima, recalling Ubah’s generosity, narrated how the senator once donated N50 million to support victims of a Boko Haram attack in Borno State, insisting the act remain private. “The youngest member of the ninth Senate was also one of its brightest stars,” Shettima said. “His generosity knew no bounds, and his political journey was exemplary.”

Senate President Akpabio described Ubah as a visionary leader and philanthropist who believed in the power of friendship. “We dedicate this day to his memory and the services he rendered to this great country,” Akpabio said. “He was a champion of alleviating the suffering of others. Let us not just mourn but celebrate his life and times.”

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin noted Ubah’s courage and focus, emphasizing his rise as a political leader despite being a first-time senator in 2019. “He spent his life for his people and was a philanthropist to the core,” Jibrin said, calling for support for Ubah’s family.

Minority Leader Abba Moro described Ubah’s passing as “sunset at noon” and a stark reminder of life’s fragility. He said, “I have lost a friend and a fantastic colleague. He was a consummate politician who advanced his career with determination and skill.”

Senators Tokunbo Abiru, Adams Oshiomhole, Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Ngwu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, and others took turns recounting Ubah’s impact. A minute of silence was observed in his honor, followed by a procession where senators filed past the casket.
