Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has lauded President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s recent decision regarding local government autonomy.

Senator Sumaila expressed his approval, citing the timely nature of the decision and its potential to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian masses.

Senator Sumaila in a statement emphasized the importance of policies aimed at improving the conditions of the grassroots population.

He commended President Tinubu for aligning with the senators’ efforts to uplift the local communities from their current hardships.

“I am happy Mr. President has begun to walk the path of salvaging our people by granting autonomy to local governments as enshrined in the constitution,” Senator Sumaila stated.

“This decision is a step in the right direction and will undoubtedly contribute to the development of our rural areas and boost the nation’s economy.”

However, while applauding the move towards autonomy, Senator Sumaila called upon President Tinubu to address challenges plaguing local government elections.

He pointed out the manipulation of electoral processes by politicians for personal gain, urging the president to take urgent action to ensure free and fair elections at the grassroots level.

“We are all aware of how local government elections are being conducted under the watch of state governors in this country,” Senator Sumaila remarked. “The processes are often manipulated, undermining the interests of the majority.

This issue must be addressed to complement the autonomy granted to local governments and extend the dividends of democracy to the grassroots.”

Senator Sumaila also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the legislative and executive branches in advocating for local government autonomy. He urged the judiciary to exercise its constitutional rights in deciding on the matter.

“We, at the National Assembly, have raised the issue and received support from the executive,” Senator Sumaila affirmed. “Now, it is over to the judiciary to make its stand. I thank the Senate President, Mr. Godswill Alpabio, and Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, for their support on this issue.”
