In response to escalating cases of violence against women and children in Nigeria, the Nigerian Senate has demonstrated unwavering resolve to intensify measures against perpetrators.

This decision, taken during plenary session on Thursday, echoed the urgency to address the issue amidst the ongoing 16 days of International advocacy against gender-based violence in the country.

Senator Kingibi Ireti (FCT) raised a compelling motion, drawing attention to the alarming surge in reported cases of violence targeting girls and women.

She passionately urged her fellow lawmakers to lead the charge in combating this widespread violation of human rights, underscoring the urgent need for action.

Senator Natasha Uduaghan of the PDP representing Kogi Central echoed the timeliness of the initiative, calling for unified support from all agencies to stand in solidarity with women.

Senator Adams Oshomole emphasized the collective responsibility in addressing this issue, urging law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, to vigorously enforce existing laws. He also stressed the Senate’s crucial role in setting an example in the fight against gender-based violence.

Senator Plang from APC Plateau Central highlighted the need to harness the unique talents of women, urging men to provide support and encouragement for women to reach their full potential.

Taking proactive steps, the Senate mandated its Committee on Women Affairs and other relevant committees to craft a comprehensive national roadmap. This roadmap aligns with the objectives outlined in the Orange Nigeria Initiative, signifying the Senate’s commitment to proactively tackle violence against women and propose viable solutions.

The United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the declaration on the elimination of violence against women in December 1993 further reinforces the commitment to eradicate such atrocities worldwide.
