The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices, following President Bola Tinubu’s nominations to fill vacancies within the apex court’s bench.
The confirmation, came during Thursday’s plenary session, after a careful consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee chairman on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.
President Tinubu’s plea to confirm these nominees, recommended by the National Judicial Council was in response to vacancies resulting from the demise and retirement of several justices within the apex court.
The confirmed nominees include: Justice Haruna Tsammani (North East), renowned for chairing the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Moore Adumein (South South), Justice Jummai Sankey (North Central), Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South East), and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South East).
Others are: Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-East), Justice Stephen Adah (North Central), Justice Habeeb Abiru (South West), Justice Jamilu Tukur (North West), Justice Abubakar Umar (North West), and Justice Mohammed Idris (North Central).
Senator Tahir Monguno, chairman of the committee, expressed confidence in the nominees’ qualifications and experience, confirming that no petitions were raised against any of them. Consequently, he recommended their immediate confirmation.
With the addition of these 11 justices, the Supreme Court now meets the statutory requirement, boasting a full complement of 21 justices on its bench.
