The Nigerian arts and theatre community has mourn the loss of Wole Oguntokun, a distinguished playwright, theatre director, and lawyer, who passed away at the age of 56 in Canada.

The news of his demise was announced by his friend and film director, Kayode Peters, via an Instagram post on Thursday afternoon.

Peters reminisced about their collaboration on various projects, including the acclaimed play “Who is Afraid of Wole Soyinka,” directed by Peters and graced by the presence of the legendary Wole Soyinka himself.

Oguntokun, born on July 15, 1967, was an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University and played a significant role in Nigerian television.

He produced and wrote TV sitcoms such as “Crossworld Blues” on DBN TV in 1999 and “Living Free” on MBI television in 2002.

As a board member of Theaturtle, a Canadian theatre company, Oguntokun continued to contribute to the arts scene even after relocating to Canada.

His impact extended beyond his creative works, as evidenced by the heartfelt tribute from actor Ozzy Agu, who fondly recalled collaborating with Oguntokun on theatre plays, including “The Red,” based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, in a 2016 interview.

The timing of Oguntokun’s passing on World Theatre Day adds a poignant layer to the loss experienced by the Nigerian arts community. His legacy as a gifted writer, dedicated thespian, and cherished friend will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
