The City of David Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos has made headlines following the suspension of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade.

This decision came in the wake of public outcry over the extravagant birthday celebration hosted by his wife, Dr.

Siju Iluyomade, shortly after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Access Holdings Plc.

According to a report by ChurchTimes, a senior pastor within the church, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the suspension was not initiated by Pastor Enoch Adeboye but was instead a directive from the church’s governing council.

The decision, although perceived by some as overdue, was deemed necessary to address concerns raised by the public.

Iluyomade’s suspension was communicated via a letter over the weekend, signaling a significant development within the RCCG community. He has been temporarily replaced by Pastor Charles Kpandei of RCCG Resurrection Parish of Region 11.

The controversy stemmed from the lavish birthday celebration held for Dr. Siju Iluyomade at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. Despite the tragic passing of Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and their son, Chizi, the event garnered attention for its opulence and timing, drawing criticism from various quarters.

The disapproval of the Wigwe family was further highlighted by their decision to exclude City of David Parish from Herbert Wigwe’s funeral proceedings. Typically, churches where deceased individuals worshipped play a central role in funeral ceremonies. However, the Wigwe family opted for another RCCG Parish in Lagos instead.

The fallout from the controversial birthday celebration underscores broader discussions within religious communities about propriety, sensitivity, and the role of leadership during times of mourning.
