In a move to enhance data management and foster efficient governance, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is gearing up to introduce an electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) accompanied by a Geospatial Data Repository.

The launch is scheduled for Wednesday, November 8, 2023, marking a significant turning point in Nigeria’s commitment to streamlined data handling.

At a pre-launch press conference on Monday, November 6, 2023, Nasir Kwarra, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), shed light on the extensive scope of the e-CRVS system.

This cutting-edge technological advancement will encompass a wide range of civil registrations, including but not limited to birth records, stillbirth registrations, birth attestations, adoptions, marriage and divorce notifications, migration records, and death statistics.

Kwarra emphasized, “The launch of the e-CRVS by President Tinubu underscores the unwavering dedication of the current government to fortify the collection, aggregation, processing, dissemination, and prompt access to vital statistics in the nation.”

This initiative is set to expedite the transformation of civil registration and vital statistics systems in Nigeria from 2023 to 2030, aligning with the nation’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the NPC has meticulously developed the e-CRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report, underscoring the transformative potential of digital technologies to securely and cost-effectively integrate data from diverse sources at scale within Nigeria.

Under the new system, digital certificates will be issued for all recorded cases, ensuring accessible and verifiable platforms for registered organizations. Additionally, a central management system, represented through a user-friendly dashboard, will analyze and interpret the aggregated civil registrations into vital statistics, facilitating data-driven decision-making processes.

The forthcoming launch symbolizes a substantial leap in Nigeria’s approach to data management and the promotion of effective policy decisions through comprehensive and up-to-date vital statistics.

President Tinubu’s commitment to modernizing data systems underscores the government’s determination to enhance the well-being of its citizens and achieve national development objectives.
