President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, reinstating the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” The decision, announced on Wednesday, has stirred both applause and consternation among citizens.

The National Anthem Bill 2024, which had been under intense scrutiny and debate in the National Assembly for several weeks, seeks to revert the country’s anthem to its previous rendition, replacing the current “Arise, O Compatriots” anthem.

While proponents of the change argue that the old anthem embodies a stronger sense of national identity and unity, critics express concerns about erasing the symbolism and sentiments embedded in the current anthem, which has been in use since 1978.

President Tinubu, in a statement following the signing of the bill, emphasized the importance of national unity and pride, stating, “Our anthem should reflect the values and aspirations of our great nation. ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ has a timeless resonance that speaks to the soul of every Nigerian.”

However, reactions from the public have been diverse. Supporters of the decision laud it as a step towards reclaiming Nigeria’s cultural heritage, while others express disappointment, viewing the move as a regression and a missed opportunity for progress.

The implementation process of the new law is expected to include widespread dissemination of the reinstated anthem across educational institutions, government ceremonies, and public events.
