The National Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the extension of Ambassador Umar Damagum’s tenure as the acting National Chairman. However, this decision remains subject to the forthcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled to commence in the coming hours.

Following a Caucus meeting held at the Bauchi Governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, addressed journalists, emphasizing the importance of continued consultation on the matter.

Ologunagba stated, “Umar Damagum will continue to be the acting National Chairman of the party until the next meeting of NEC.
The party considers that it is important to have more consultation on that issue.

Furthermore, Ologunagba clarified that the NEC meeting’s agenda is focused on fostering unity and reconciliation within the party, rather than discussing leadership changes. The Caucus also reached a consensus to conclude all congresses in the states and local government between June and August of this year, aiming to streamline party affairs.

Additionally, the Caucus extended the mandate of the party’s constitution review committee to incorporate new recommendations.

Prior to the Caucus meeting, the National Working Committee of the party had expressed a vote of confidence in Ambassador Umar Damagum.

However, the North Central zone of the party had advocated for the appointment of one of their own to complete the tenure of the suspended National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Citing Section 47(6) of the PDP Constitution, which stipulates appointing a replacement from the same area or zone, the North Central zone urged Damagum to revert to his previous position as Deputy National Chairman North.

The ongoing internal strife within the party underscores the complexities surrounding leadership succession and regional representation. Notably, the forthcoming NEC meeting is anticipated to address these contentious issues and provide clarity on the party’s direction moving forward.

The Caucus meeting witnessed the public appearance of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, marking their first joint appearance since the 2023 elections. Their presence underscores the significance of the ongoing deliberations within the PDP, particularly amidst the aftermath of the divisive 2023 elections where conflicting allegiances emerged.
