The Northern Senators Forum has extended heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Borno State following the tragic loss of lives and property caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, which triggered widespread flooding in Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

In a press release signed by Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, Chairman of the Northern Senators Forum, the forum expressed sorrow over the devastation and empathized with families affected by the flood.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those displaced by this devastating flood.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno State during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The flooding, which followed the dam’s collapse, has led to significant displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and loss of farmlands. Hundreds of people are currently displaced, with many communities cut off due to washed-out roads. The incident has further strained local resources, as emergency response teams work tirelessly to provide shelter and relief to the affected populace.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, a native of Borno State, was commended for his prompt visit to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. His swift response, according to the forum, exemplifies the government’s commitment to providing immediate assistance to communities in distress. The Vice President’s visit was marked by a pledge to expedite federal aid and ensure that affected areas receive adequate support.

“We appreciate the Vice President’s leadership and the government’s dedication to alleviating the suffering of those affected by the flood,” Senator Yar’Adua stated.

The Northern Senators Forum also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a relief package of 3 billion naira to each state to tackle flood-related disasters. This financial intervention is part of broader efforts by the federal government to address the recurring issue of flooding across the country, which has become more frequent due to climate change.

“This timely intervention will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of affected citizens,” the forum remarked, urging state governments to utilize the funds effectively and implement long-term strategies to mitigate future environmental disasters.

The forum called on states to take proactive measures in addressing climate change, urging the development of sustainable environmental policies. “We urge all states to take responsibility and develop strategic plans to address climate change and prevent further environmental disasters,” the statement said, highlighting the Senate’s commitment to enacting legislation that promotes sustainable development and mitigates the impact of natural disasters.

The Borno flood has sparked renewed calls for better flood control measures, especially in northern Nigeria, where dam failures and excessive rainfall have led to repeated disasters. With the rainy season still ongoing, the risk of further flooding remains high, and experts are calling for increased investment in infrastructure and climate adaptation.
