Multiple fatalities occurred at a police checkpoint in Abia State.
Tragedy struck on the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway, resulting in the deaths of at least 18 travelers on Thursday morning.
Reports indicate that the incident took place at a police checkpoint near the Lokpanta area of Abia State during the early hours of Thursday.
An 18-seater commercial bus, awaiting police clearance at the checkpoint, was struck by a truck whose driver lost control, leading to the tragic demise of the bus driver and all passengers.
Eyewitness Bananas Okereke disclosed that the scene remained scattered with victims’ bodies as of 8:20 am.
He also mentioned that the road was obstructed by protesting bus drivers and other motorists, demanding accountability for the policemen involved in causing the accident.
Concerned parties, including colleagues of the bus driver and other road users, have taken a stand, insisting on justice for the victims and expressing their determination to await the arrival of Governor Alex Otti at the scene.
