The Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, has pledged to Nigerian football fans that the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, will soon have a new coach, with an appointment expected within the next one or two weeks.

Since the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations in February, where the team finished as runners-up, the Super Eagles have been without a substantive coach following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract.

During an exclusive interview, Senator Enoh emphasized the urgency of filling the coaching vacancy, noting that Finidi George had temporarily overseen the team in the last two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.

“The first responsibility of getting a coach lies with the NFF,” Senator Enoh stated.

“I have been in touch with the NFF because I think Nigerians didn’t expect that after AFCON and after the contract with coach Peseiro came to an end and wasn’t renewed, that it will take as long and not have a coach yet.”

He underscored the significance of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June, expressing confidence that the NFF is fully aware of the expectations of Nigerians and is committed to ensuring the team’s success.

He acknowledged the team’s shaky start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot afford to miss out on another World Cup appearance considering the previous losses incurred by the nation.

“I think we have not had a tremendous start, it’s a shaky one, and therefore there is a mileage to cover given that we didn’t go for the last World Cup,” Senator Enoh remarked. “We cannot afford not to go for the next, and therefore everything needs to be done.”

The Minister’s assurance comes amidst heightened anticipation and scrutiny as Nigerian football enthusiasts eagerly await the appointment of a new coach to lead the Super Eagles on their quest for international success.
