The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has officially kicked off the nationwide verification of names on the National Social Register. This pivotal initiative was inaugurated in the suburbs of Lagos.

While addressing the media on Monday, Edu announced the commencement of the comprehensive verification exercise, set to span three weeks.

According to her, the national-scale endeavor aims to address the credibility concerns previously raised by the National Economic Council (NEC) regarding the National Social Register.

The Minister assured the public of her commitment to collaborate with states across the nation to validate the entries on the register, ensuring that it will accurately reflects the most vulnerable citizens.

The verification process has already commenced in several communities in Lagos State, including Oko Agbon, Adogbo, Migbewhe, Makoko, Sogunro, and Apollo villages.

She also highlighted government’s intention to inject financial support directly into households across Nigeria. “This assistance will encompass various aspects, including business support, education, payment of children’s school fees, improved access to social services, transportation cost subsidies, increased spending power for essential healthcare needs, and job creation”.

She elaborated, stating, “For us to do this, we need to verify the National Social Register. The President has given approval for us to go to the grassroots and ensure that the register accurately represents those truly in need.”

Edu emphasized the importance of verifying that individuals listed on the register live below the poverty line, earning less than one dollar, or 95 cents, per day. The government aims to ensure that only those genuinely in need receive assistance, removing any ineligible beneficiaries.

The verification process incorporates both community and geographical targeting. While some areas within Makoko have already been covered by the National Social Register, those that remain unaccounted for will be included.

Moreover, the Minister disclosed that state governors will oversee the steering committee at the state level, while local government authorities and community leaders will actively participate in ensuring the National Social Register’s integrity.

In her closing remarks, she asserted, “We want to ensure that those who will be receiving assistance are those who truly need it, with no room for political, social, or personal interference.”
