The Honorable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, CON, FCIAbr., has underscored the pivotal role of the aviation industry in fostering sustainable growth and development across various sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Minister Keyamo made this declaration during the 2023 Aviation Management retreat at Jubili Hotel in Warri, Delta State.

Addressing the gathering, Keyamo highlighted the strategic importance of the aviation sector, aligning it with the goals of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration to position Nigeria’s aviation industry as a hub on the African continent and globally.

He expressed optimism that his 5-point priority agenda would be translated into actionable programs by all departments and agencies under the ministry’s purview.

“This retreat is an opportunity to conduct a SWOT analysis of the aviation sector, devising practical solutions to achieve desired results. Growth in the aviation sector should be private sector-driven to attract foreign direct investment, and policies must adhere to ICAO standards,” emphasized Keyamo.

Concerning the 2023 ICAO Universal Oversight Audit Program, Keyamo expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s 70 percent score against the 75 percent benchmark, stressing the industry’s safety and security critical nature. He urged rigorous Monitoring and Evaluation to maintain and enhance these standards.

In his call for collective commitment, Keyamo stated, “Mr. President is passionate about transforming this nation, and I expect you all to share the same passion in transforming your departments and agencies for the good of the aviation industry and the nation at large. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work.”

During the retreat, Senator Buhari Abdulatif, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, represented by Peter Jiya, Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, urged the government to address challenges in the aviation industry. He emphasized the need to improve infrastructure at major airports, tackle safety concerns, reduce the high cost of aviation fuel, address flight delays, and enhance manpower skills to attract foreign investors.

Hon. Abdulahi Idris Garba, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, represented by Hon. Akingbaso Festus, Deputy Chairman House Committee on Aviation, assured the ministry of the committee’s commitment to providing legislative support for the fruition of its projects.
