A man wrongly accused of stealing a mobile phone has been beaten to death by angry mob in Delta state, on Tuesday.
SP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, confirmed the details, revealing that the victim fell prey to a brutal attack orchestrated by members of the Anioma security watch.
According to Edafe, the mob, spurred by baseless accusations, mercilessly beat the victim until he succumbed to his injuries.
“The unfortunate incident occurred when the Anioma security watch responded to an allegation of phone theft by taking matters into their own hands,” Edafe explained in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Expressing dismay over the incident, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, condemned the use of vigilante justice and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted. He emphasized the urgency of bringing the perpetrators to justice and preventing similar incidents in the future.
“This senseless act of violence underscores the dangers of mob justice,” CP Abaniwonda stated. “We are committed to apprehending those responsible and ensuring that justice is served.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of due process and the dangers of acting on unverified accusations.
The Delta State Police Command continues to urge the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report suspicions to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation.
