Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, fondly referred to as the “Farmer Governor,” has expressed optimism about the Federal Government’s livestock development project in partnership with a Brazilian protein company.

Governor Bago stated that the initiative would unlock numerous developmental opportunities for the state and Nigeria as a whole.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Brazilian firm, led by Hajiya Aisha Rimi, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), the Governor commended the project’s potential to revolutionize agriculture and livestock production in the region.

Governor Bago emphasized the significance of the project, which aims to integrate crop production with animal husbandry and other agricultural value chains. He noted that having one of the world’s largest protein companies involved was a major milestone for the state.

He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selecting Niger State as the pilot location for the $2.5 billion project, describing it as a strategic move to transform the state into a hub for livestock development.

Hajiya Aisha Rimi praised Niger State for its strategic role as Nigeria’s “food capital,” highlighting its importance in addressing the nation’s food and protein deficits. She stated that the initiative would bolster the livestock industry and enhance food security across Africa.

Fabio Maia, a representative of the Brazilian firm, commended the hardworking spirit of Nigerians and noted the immense market opportunities in the country. He emphasized that the project would foster knowledge exchange and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The delegation inspected various livestock facilities, including Zaima Farms, Dogarawa Farms, Tagwai Dam, and Niger Foods Farm.

Zaima Farms: Produces an average of 300 crates of eggs daily at full capacity.

Dogarawa Farms: Specializes in cattle fattening, milk production, and yogurt processing, with 175 cattle producing over 300 liters of milk daily.

The team expressed satisfaction with the facilities and confidence in the project’s success.

This project follows the recent signing of a $2.5 billion Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Nigeria and the Brazilian firm to develop the nation’s livestock and meat processing sectors. Niger State, as the pilot state, is set to lead the way in transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

Governor Bago’s administration remains committed to leveraging this initiative to boost the state’s economy, enhance food production, and create employment opportunities.
