By Iyojo Ameh
In a bold move to curb cybercrime in Kogi State, the government has issued a warning to internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo Boys, indicating plans to demolish their residences.
This announcement was made by the State Security Adviser, retired Commander Jerry Omodara, during Monday’s broadcast of “State of Kogi,” a participatory program on Radio Kogi.
The rise in cybercrime activities in Kogi State has prompted increased scrutiny and action from law enforcement agencies, including recent arrests by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Omodara stressed the importance of public cooperation in providing information to apprehend these fraudsters.
“We will soon go after hotels used by Yahoo Boys and apply appropriate sanctions to affected hospitality facilities,” Commander Omodara stated, underscoring the government’s firm stance against facilitating cybercrime.
Furthermore, the Security Adviser cautioned landlords against renting out properties to Yahoo Boys, warning that such structures would face demolition.
He revealed that government authorities, in collaboration with security agencies, have identified properties suspected to have been acquired through criminal activities, which are slated for demolition.
In addressing broader security concerns, Commander Omodara highlighted ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the state, including directives for security agencies and local hunters to crack down on armed individuals in forested areas.
Commending the proactive measures of Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo in tackling various security challenges, Omodara called upon corporations and affluent individuals to contribute to the State Security Trust Fund as part of efforts to enhance security infrastructure.
Responding to inquiries regarding the Bangana crisis in Omala Local Government Area, he assured the public that the government is actively managing the situation.
The security adviser, while commending the effort of Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, in tackling insecurity, called on companies and well-to-do individuals to assist the government by donating to the State Security Trust Fund.
