Kissing Scandal: Spanish FA president resigns
By Iyojo Ameh
Amid a torrent of criticism and controversy, the head of the Spanish Football Federation, Mr. Luis Rubiales, announced his resignation from his position following an incident where he kissed Jenni Hermoso during the presentation of the Women’s World Cup trophy.
This turn of events was confirmed in an official statement released on a Sunday.
Rubiales conveyed his resignation to the acting federation president, Pedro Rocha, acknowledging the swift suspension imposed by FIFA and ongoing investigations against him.
He further remarked, “Insisting on waiting and holding on is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football.”
The controversy erupted when Rubiales was captured on camera sharing a kiss with Jenni Hermoso immediately after Spain’s victory over England with a score of 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final held in Australia. This incident prompted widespread calls for his removal from his position.
Initially, Rubiales defended himself, claiming the act was consensual, and he expressed his desire to continue in his role. However, in the face of mounting pressure and legal implications, he ultimately chose to step down.
Simultaneously, Jenni Hermoso had submitted a legal complaint against the embattled Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales.
