Income generating :NGO trains 200 women, youths in Bauchi

A non-governmental organization,
SABEERASH foundation in Bauchi says it has trained more than 200 women and youths on income generating activities and managing Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGVB) in Dagauda,Jalam and Dambam communities, Dambam local government area of Bauchi State.

The Programme Manager of the NGO Mr Joel Timothy disclosed this at a community feedback meeting of 50 participants on Women voice’s and leadership project (WVL) on Saturday in Dagauda Community of Dambam LGA.

He noted that the essence of the training was to enable them to have another source of living which by extension, would help alleviate poverty.

“200 Women and young Girls who were the beneficiaries of the project selected from the Dagauda/Jalam and Dambam community were trained on Village Saving and Loan Activities (VSLA).

“The beneficiaries were able to save over 2.8 million during their group saving meetings.

“The women were also trained on income generating activities which include making of liquid soap, Vaseline, mentholated cream, Izal, curry and garlic powder among others.,” Timothy said.

He added the beneficiaries were also
sensitize on how to address incidences of Sexual and Gender Based Violence

“Women economic empowerment and to combat, response to GBV issues and improve on the vulnerable women and girls’ livelihood,”he said

The programme officer said the WVL project was implemented by SABEERASH Foundation in collaboration with Fahimta Women and Youth Initiative with the Support of ActionAid Nigeria.

“WVL project which is a five-year project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC)Targeting 100 plus local women’s rights organizations (LWROs) and their networks in Nigeria,

“Aimed at tackling the barriers to gender equality and supporting the empowerment of women and girls through provision of technical and financial resources,” he said.

Representative of community leader Malam Buba Ahmed Jalam commended the Organisations for the training, saying it would go a long way in generating income among the women and youth to become self-reliant.

Responding on behalf of the Participant, Musa Garba Dambam, commended SABEERASH foundation for the awareness and training WVL and sensitization on Sexual and Gender Based Violence which has been a concern before the intervention of WVL project in the various communities.

He said the GBV case management committees established by WVL project yielded a lot of results by making Vulnerable women and young girls safe from SGBV incidences.
