Hit-And-Run Driver Kills Police Officer at Ekiti Checkpoint

A hit-and-run driver has killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Ekiti State Police Command, in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The officer, identified as ASP Idris Lawal, was struck at a checkpoint along Iworoko Road on Monday night.

According to an internal police memo, the incident took place around 12:23 a.

m. while officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation at Ayemi Garage along Iworoko Road.

The Mercedes Benz, with no registration, hit the officer and fled the scene.

Inspector Segun Adedeji, who was present during the operation, reported the incident immediately.

ASP Lawal was rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), where he was pronounced dead by the medical staff.

His body was deposited at the EKSUTH morgue for an autopsy, while efforts are underway to apprehend the driver responsible for the hit-and-run.

The police are continuing investigations to locate the culprit and bring them to justice. The Ekiti State Police Command has expressed condolences to the family of the late officer, describing the incident as a great loss to the force.
