The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has appointed Benson Ojeikere, an indigene of Edo State, as the new Head of the Abia State Civil Service. The historic appointment was made official during a swearing-in ceremony held on Monday in Umuahia.

In a statement released by the Governor’s spokesman, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Ojeikere’s journey in Abia State began in 1999 when he arrived as a participant in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. His exceptional performance during his service year earned him the recognition of best corps member and an automatic employment offer in the state’s civil service.

Over the years, Ojeikere rose through the ranks, demonstrating remarkable dedication and professionalism. In 2023, he was appointed a Permanent Secretary after excelling in a rigorous selection process conducted by the Otti administration. He served in the Government House before his recent elevation to Head of Civil Service.

During the swearing-in, Governor Otti congratulated Ojeikere and urged him to uphold the values of integrity, excellence, and dedication. The Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to a merit-based system aimed at improving the efficiency and reputation of the Abia State Civil Service.

“We are determined to make the Abia State Civil Service a benchmark for other states across Nigeria. This appointment is a testament to our belief in meritocracy and hard work,” Otti said.

In his acceptance speech, Ojeikere expressed his surprise at the appointment, admitting that he never anticipated advancing beyond the rank of senior director.

“I am still in shock over this appointment. I’ve always given my best to the civil service, but I never imagined becoming the Head of Service. I’m grateful to Governor Otti for recognizing my efforts and allowing God to use him in reshaping perceptions of meritocracy in the civil service,” Ojeikere said.

He pledged to align with the Governor’s vision of revitalizing the Abia State Civil Service and making it a model for other states to emulate.

Otti’s administration continues to champion reforms aimed at fostering transparency, accountability, and excellence in governance.
