The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has called on stakeholders in the transport sector to join its unified approach in tackling high incidence of road accidents, especially during the ’ember months in the country.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed at the opening of a two-day workshop for FRSC management staff in Abuja said road accidents are the leading cause of death among young people hence the need for collective efforts in bringing sanity to the highways.
According to the FRSC Corps Marshal, Nigeria, with teeming youths, stands to suffer immeasurable losses if road safety does not improve.
The FRSC Boss stressed that the corps would continue to engage traditional and religious leaders as well as other stakeholders in the transport sector in Town meetings to strengthen campaign on safer roads for economic activities to thrive in the country.
In a presentation, the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Training, Chidi Nkwota, said the Corps under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Mohammed has placed priority on capacity building of officers and men for effective operations nationwide.
The Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of operations, Hyginus Omeje also said the new unit commands were created with required logistics to increase FRSC’s visibility and attend to emergencies.
The ACM Operations, however, assured that adequate measures had been put in place to ensure the safety of road users during the festive season and beyond.
The FRSC Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal, Olusegun Ogungbemide, explained that this year’s campaign is unique due to its emphasis on passenger rights, which empowers them to voice concerns on any reckless driving.
“We are focusing not only on educating drivers but also on informing passengers on their rights and encouraging them to speak up against reckless driving.”
According to FRSC’s spokesman, the approach this season also involves expanded outreach efforts beyond traditional methods like motor park visits as the Corps aims to engage road users more directly to inculcate a road safety culture in road users.
