The Labour Party in Edo State has elected Olumide Akpata, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), as its flag bearer for the upcoming governorship election in September 2024.

Akpata emerged victorious in the party’s primary election held at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, Airport Road in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

Garnering a total of 316 votes, he clinched the party ticket amid a competitive field of contenders.

The announcement of Akpata’s victory follows his earlier declaration of interest in the Edo State governorship race under the Labour Party.

His decision to enter politics was motivated by a desire to prioritize the welfare of the people of Edo State.

During his formal declaration at the Edo LP secretariat in Benin City last October, Akpata underscored his commitment to placing the interests of the people at the forefront of governance. He lamented the prevalent disconnect between the electorate and political leadership, emphasizing the need for a more people-centric approach to governance.
