President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning to power distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria, threatening to revoke their licenses amidst the ongoing challenge of epileptic power supply across the nation.

The announcement came from the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who expressed deep concern over the continuous inadequate power supply and its adverse effects on Nigeria’s economic development and the well-being of its citizens.

While addressing the press on Wednesday, Adelabu disclosed that the Chief Executives of key DisCos, including the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, along with the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, have been summoned to a crucial meeting.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions,” stated Adelabu.

He lamented the insufficient electricity distribution by the DisCos despite the increased generation capacity, attributing the problem to vandalism of power infrastructure in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

Adelabu emphasized his commitment to holding all distribution companies accountable for their performance, warning that “willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.”

Furthermore, Adelabu instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions. He also mentioned plans to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies to alleviate financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide.

As the government intensifies efforts to address the power supply challenges, Adelabu urged electricity consumers to remain patient and assured them of ongoing initiatives to provide better service to all Nigerians.
