The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to complete the pending segment of the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway by the end of the current year, despite encountering challenges and undergoing cost reassessments during the project’s execution.
During a recent meeting in Abuja with all ministry directors, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the completion of the project for the benefit of Nigerians before 2024 concludes.
Umahi highlighted the remaining stretch of approximately 1.7 kilometers in two sections along the expressway. He emphasized the need for thorough supervision work and a comprehensive understanding of the actual designs for these segments.
Regarding funding, the minister shed light on the financial hurdles, indicating that the initial project cost, which started at N165 billion, underwent revisions, escalating to N655 billion. However, the current demand from contractors stands at a hefty N1.35 trillion, a figure deemed unfeasible by the government.
Expressing concern over the exorbitant request, Umahi mentioned ongoing considerations regarding the existing sub-grade to explore possible solutions. Additionally, plans are underway for the initial 40 kilometers to be constructed by Dangote under the Tax Credit Scheme, with a focus on employing concrete pavement.
While acknowledging the financial constraints and challenges, the minister assured the public of his steadfast dedication to completing the project within the stated timeframe. “No matter what happens, that road will be done this year,” he emphasized.
The Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, an essential route for commuters and trade, has remained a priority for the government, reflecting its commitment to improving national infrastructure despite obstacles encountered during its development.
