A truck carrying sand has crushed a thrift collector to death at the Amukpe axis of Sapele in Delta State.

An eye witness said the thrift collector who was riding on his bicycle was attempting to avoid colliding with a wheelbarrow pusher when the fast moving truck ran onto him from behind, shattering his bicycle and killing him on the spot.

It was reported that the thrift collector was at the Amukpe Market to transact his daily business of thrift collection with the traders who were his regular customers and was on his way back home when the accident occurred along the road.

Following the unfortunate tragedy, the residents of the area were reported to have expressed their concern over trading along the road by the market.

They called on the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, Hon. Eugene Inoaghan, and other relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the issue of trading along the roadsides by the market, saying that it had constituted a worrisome nuisance and disrupting free flow of traffic and posing risks to both traders and passersby.

Friday Akparobe, a resident in the area, said the continued trading along the road had done more harm than good.
