The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba, has passed away.

The lawmaker passed away after a brief illness in the early hours of Wednesday at the Abuja National Hospital, according to a source close to the family.

Ghali Na’Abba serves as Speaker during the tenure of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Born into the Na’Abba family of Tudun Wada, Kano City, on September 27, 1958, Mr. Na’Abba was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University in 1979.

He had his education at Jakara Primary School and Rumfa College all in Kano state.

In 1999, Na’Abba was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives representing Kano State. He ascended to the role of Speaker shortly after the House’s inauguration, following the resignation of the then Speaker, Salisu Buhari, from the same Kano State amidst a certificate forgery scandal. Na’Abba’s tenure in office marked a significant period in the country’s legislative history.
