Senator Monday Okpebholo, the newly elected Governor of Edo State, and his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, have officially received their Certificates of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ceremony, held on Thursday at the INEC headquarters in Benin, was a key step in the transition following their victory in the recent gubernatorial election.

The presentation was graced by prominent figures, including the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Other notable attendees included the court-reinstated Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd), Senator Francis Alimikhena, Hon.

Ogbeide Ihama, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion, and Blessing Agbonmhere.

Senator Okpebholo’s win in the Edo gubernatorial election marks a significant political shift, as he successfully defeated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama. According to the official results released by INEC, Okpebholo secured approximately 53% of the vote, while Ihama garnered 42%, with the remainder split among other candidates. Voter turnout stood at around 46%, with INEC praising the process as largely peaceful despite isolated incidents of disruption.

The election, which had been closely monitored by both local and international observers, was hailed for its transparency and adherence to electoral guidelines.

However, the PDP has hinted at potential legal challenges, citing concerns about the integrity of certain voting processes in some local government areas. Political analysts have suggested that this election may shape future contests in the South-South region, where the APC is looking to strengthen its presence.

During his post-election remarks, Senator Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to uniting Edo State and addressing pressing issues such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and job creation. “This is a new chapter for our beloved state. We are ready to work with all stakeholders to move Edo forward,” he said, adding that his administration would prioritize inclusive governance and development.

Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the Deputy Governor-elect, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that their leadership would focus on youth empowerment and boosting the local economy. “We have a clear vision for Edo, and our mission is to make that vision a reality by creating opportunities for all,” Idahosa said.
