Canada Announces New Express Entry Draw for Workers to Reduce Labour Shortage
By Iyojo Ameh
The Canadian government has announced new categories for the Express Entry draw for workers and expanded the list of occupations eligible for work and permanent residence.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed that the new category for the 2025 Express Entry draws aims to address labour skill shortages in the Canadian economy.
According to the IRCC, this latest announcement focuses on the federal economic class, where candidates with relevant work experience in Canada will be invited to apply for permanent residence.
Express Entry is Canada’s flagship application management system for individuals seeking permanent migration through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.
The IRCC emphasized that immigration accounts for nearly 100% of Canada’s labour force growth, playing a crucial role in addressing workforce shortages in key sectors.
In 2023, the IRCC introduced category-based selection to target specific occupations and high-demand skills. The 2025 system aims to address labour shortages, demographic goals, and Canada’s bilingual identity.
Canada is focusing on key sectors to strengthen its workforce and has included occupations in high demand, allowing skilled workers to apply for migration.
The country aims to enhance Francophone immigration and will invite candidates with strong French language skills.
Additionally, invitations will be extended to candidates with work experience in the following fields:
Healthcare (including family physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and chiropractors)
Social Services
Skilled Trades (such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors)
Construction (including contractors and supervisors in oil and gas drilling and services)
