President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have officially dissolved the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the Ministry of Sports Development. The landmark decision was made during the FEC meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

The move was disclosed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

This restructuring is part of President Tinubu’s broader plans to streamline governance and improve efficiency in Nigeria’s public administration.

In place of the scrapped ministries, the government has established a Ministry of Regional Development, which will now manage all Regional Development Commissions.

These include prominent bodies like the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the North West Development Commission, the South West Development Commission, and the North East Development Commission. The aim is to centralize efforts for regional development, reducing administrative redundancies.

In sports, the National Sports Commission will take over the duties previously handled by the Ministry of Sports. This shift is intended to better promote and regulate sports activities across the country, enhancing national and international sports representation.

Additionally, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. This merger is expected to boost Nigeria’s tourism industry by aligning it with the country’s cultural and creative sectors, thus promoting the nation’s rich heritage on a global scale.
