In a gripping semi-final showdown at the Stade Bouake, Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured their berth in the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a nail-biting encounter against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

The match kicked off with a tense first half, with neither side able to break the deadlock. However, in the 67th minute, Nigeria’s Skipper William Troost-Ekong capitalized on a penalty opportunity, converting flawlessly after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the South African box, giving the three-time champions a crucial lead.

Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, appeared to seal the victory for Nigeria with his second goal of the tournament in the 85th minute.

However, jubilation turned to dismay as VAR intervened, disallowing the goal due to a pre-goal infringement.

With the game hanging in the balance, South Africa’s Teboho Mokoena stepped up in the dying moments of regulation time, converting a penalty to equalize on the dot of 90 minutes, forcing the match into extra time.

Despite the additional 30 minutes of play, neither side managed to find the back of the net, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout.

In the nerve-wracking shootout, Nigeria emerged victorious, with goalkeeper Nwabali making crucial saves to deny two of South Africa’s spot-kicks, ultimately securing a hard-fought win for the Super Eagles.
