38 Nasarawa protesting women: Court to decide their bail conditions January 31st

LAFIA — THE 38 protesting women detained in prison over their protest against the Supreme Court Judgement that declared Governor Abdullahi Sule winner of March 18 governorship election in Nasarawa are you have their bail conditions decided january 31st

It would be recalled that the magistrate court sitting in Lafia had last week ordered the release of the women from prison after fulfilling the bail conditions spelt out to them which was not however met.

The bail conditions which stipulated that each of the detained women must produce a serving director each residing within the area where the court is located, each director must produce N2million including their first letter of appointment as well as their bank account.

The women who could not meet the bail conditions were however returned to prison last week Friday to be bailed on Monday this week.

Having failed to meet the bail conditions, the magistrate has again fixed Wednesday, January 31, to deliberate on the application filed by the counsel representing 38 protesting women for alleged breach of peace in the state.

The women were apprehended immediately following the Supreme Court’s verdict that upheld Governor Abdullahi Sule’s election, citing alleged breaches of public peace and other charges.

In an interview on Monday, the counsel representing the defendants, Ayiwulu Baba Ayiwulu, said they have petitioned the court on the review of the bail conditions stating further that the essence of the application was to review the bail condition to guarantee the release of the detained women.

“We have since petitioned the court to review the initial order requiring each defendant to produce a director and fulfil other bail requirements. I do not know why the review is being delayed”, Barrister Ayiwulu stated

“We remain optimistic that justice will prevail, and the rights of these women will be duly acknowledged,” Ayiwulu declared

The defend counsel further added that “We proposed a new bail bond arrangement, suggesting that Hon. Esson Mairiga, the House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, has agreed to stand as the surety for all the women.”

The court has adjourned the ruling on the bail application to Wednesday to allow for further review and consideration of the proposed adjustments.
