The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command swiftly responded to reports of an explosion in the Maitama area, aiming to dispel fears and provide clarity on the incident.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Command addressed the incident that occurred on 24/01/2024 at approximately 11:45 hrs near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, Abuja.

Contrary to initial concerns of a bomb blast, the FCT Police revealed that the explosion resulted from an overheated metal refuse bin.

The statement emphasized that a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were dispatched to assess the situation.

Preliminary findings indicated that the explosion was triggered when an overheated metal refuse container activated under intense heat.

The blast caused injuries to two refuse evacuators, currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.

The FCT Police Command urged the public to exercise caution, recommending the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal to mitigate the risk associated with overheated metal refuse containers.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to the safety measures outlined by the FCT Police Command to prevent similar incidents in the future.
