Senate Issues Stern Warning to MDAs on 2024 Budget Defense

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has issued a stern warning to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the against the adoption of a lackadaisical attitude during the forthcoming fiscal year’s budget defense.

Speaking at an interactive session hosted by the Senate Committee on Appropriations, themed “2024 Budget: Budget and Budgetary processes, delivering improved outcomes in 2024,” held at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

The Senate President, represented by Deputy Senate President Senator Jubril Barau, emphasized the severe repercussions any apathy shown during budget defenses could incur.

Echoing this sentiment, the Finance Minister, Mr.

Wale Edun highlighted Nigeria’s pressing fiscal constraints, stressing the urgent need to shift towards concessional, cost-effective, and climate-related funding solutions.

The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s unwavering stance against lackadaisical conduct among government functionaries within all MDAs concerning their budget defenses, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining the January to December budget cycle.

The Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriation, Sen. Solomon Olamilakon, emphasized the significance of this event as a continuation of the 10th National Assembly’s push for an inclusive budget process, aiming for the nation’s benefit and strict adherence to the January–December budget cycle commitment.

You may recall that President Bola Tinubu, during a joint sitting of the National Assembly, unveiled a proposed 2024 budget of N27.5 trillion.

The Senate initiated debates on the general principles of the budget on November 30, 2023, subsequently passing it for the second reading on December 1, 2023.
