The Federal Government has announced its intention to initiate legal proceedings against a couple, Ifeanyi and Christabel Ewuru, from Enugu state following allegations of child molestation and neglect of their eight-year-old daughter.

This decision was conveyed by the Minister of Women Affairs Mrs. Uju Ohanenye during a press conference held in Abuja.

The minister emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring justice for the young survivor and intends for this case to serve as a deterrent to individuals who may contemplate similar actions.

The minister expressed deep concern about the persistent issues of sexual and gender-based violence, harmful traditional practices, and various forms of abuse against women, children, and vulnerable individuals.

While shedding light on the distressing situation, the minister said, “This eight-year-old girl has been molested repeatedly by her stepfather, who has inflicted physical harm and transmitted diseases, as confirmed by medical examinations, legal professionals, and the child’s mother. Although the matter was brought to court, the magistrate released the accused on bail.”

She raised questions about the reasons behind the release of the accused, highlighting the mother’s plea against her husband’s imprisonment. She voiced the concerns for the voiceless young girl and the emotional trauma she endured due to the threats and the failure to disclose the molestation.

The minister announced, “We are filing negligence charges against the woman, as her inaction allowed the child to suffer over an extended period. It is disheartening that she defended the man responsible for her daughter’s suffering, seemingly to preserve their marriage or for other reasons.”

She continued, “We are also pursuing legal action against the man on behalf of the young girl to ensure he is held accountable for his actions. The principles of the rule of law, truth, and justice must prevail, particularly for this young girl.”

Mrs. Ohanenye disclosed the government’s plans to establish mobile courts to expedite the prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence cases and other harmful practices against women and children, thereby ensuring justice for survivors.

“These actions are intended to offer solace to this young girl and prevent the long-term psychological impact of her ordeal. There is no longer room for such impunity in our country. Commit a crime, face the consequences,” she asserted.

The minister concluded by appealing to the President, the Attorney General, and the Chief Judges of states to expedite the establishment of mobile courts to accelerate matters related to women’s affairs and provide swift protection and justice for survivors.
