PROWAN Urges New AGF to Uphold Prudence and Integrity
By Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka
Hajiya Mariam Jubrin, the National Vice Chairperson of Professional Women Accountants of Nigeria (PROWAN), has called upon the newly appointed Account General of the Federation (AGF) to embody the values of prudence and integrity as she assumes her crucial role in the government.
Speaking at the 10th Anniversary celebration of PROWAN in the nation’s capital, Abuja, themed “Organisational Leadership and Growth Trajectory,” Hajiya Mariam Jubrin emphasized the importance of this appointment.
Furthermore, Hajiya Mariam Jubrin urged the government to take taxation seriously, especially concerning foreign entities, as a means to address the nation’s economic challenges. She dismissed any notion that women haven’t done enough to address these issues and called upon Nigerians to exercise patience when assessing the performance of those in authority.
PROWAN, established by the Association of National Accounts of Nigeria (ANAN) in 2013, has been actively working to organize and empower women to contribute to economic enhancement and provide guidance to the government in tackling issues such as fraud.
Additionally, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed, Chairperson of the Local Organisation Committee (LOC), emphasized the importance of placing competent women accountants in key positions in the country to revive the economy. She asserted, “Women accountants, with their proven track record, can play a pivotal role in revitalizing the economy. Nigeria’s economic recovery will depend not only on time but also on our support for those in authority.”
In response to the ongoing palliatives introduced to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed stressed the need for careful supervision to ensure that these aids reach the intended beneficiaries without causing inflation.
The 10th Anniversary of PROWAN promises to be a significant event, celebrating the prudence and capabilities of women in Nigeria. Princess (Mrs) Elemanya Ebiliah, the National Chairperson of the association, expressed her confidence in women accountants, highlighting their dependability, effectiveness, efficiency, and prudence. She sees them as the future leaders of the profession, as exemplified by the current AGF, with the expectation of more women holding such prestigious positions in the future.
The event featured insightful presentations, including one by Dr. Hadiza Ali on the history of Nigeria’s Subsidy Removal dating back to 1970 and another by Dr. Sarah Khibel, assessing leadership styles among practicing professional women accountants globally.
This historic appointment of a woman as AGF reflects a significant milestone for gender equality and prudence in Nigeria’s government leadership. It is expected to usher in an era of renewed economic focus and progress.
