Just in: Supreme Court to Consider Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal
By Iyojo Ameh
The Supreme Court is set to potentially hear the appeal of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB).
The announcement was made by Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to Kanu, in a statement provided to the media.
Ejiofor indicated that there is a strong indication that the court may schedule a new date for the hearing of Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal after the initial date of September 18, 2023, was canceled.
The Supreme Court officially resumed its new Legal Year on September 18, 2023, with the formal commencement of appeal hearings expected to take place in the upcoming week.
It’s worth noting that Professor Mike Ozekhome, SAN, lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, had previously requested the court’s approval for September 28, 2023, as the new scheduled date for the appeal hearing.
Ejiofor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Our request is simple – let this appeal be heard with every urgency it deserves so that the fate of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been illegally held in the solitary confinement of the SSS [State Security Service], will be determined.” He noted that Nnamdi Kanu had been discharged of all the criminal charges against him since October 13, 2022, and expressed concern about his continued detention in violation of court orders.
The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu is hopeful that justice will be served promptly, and they remain committed to seeking a resolution in this matter.
