The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed that 20 candidates vying for chairmanship positions in the forthcoming local government elections in Kano State have tested positive for various hard drugs.

The revelation was made on Monday, September 10, by Abubakar Ahmad, the NDLEA commander in Kano.

According to Ahmad, the affected aspirants, all from the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), tested positive for substances including opioids like codeine, THC (the psychoactive compound in cannabis), benzodiazepines, and nicotine.

The NDLEA further clarified that no female aspirants were among those who tested positive, and it assured the public that drug screening will continue to ensure that all candidates are clear of drug use before the elections.

Once the screenings are complete, the final verification process will be carried out by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

The local government elections are set for October 26, 2024, with 44 chairmanship and 484 councillor positions to be contested.

The drug screening is part of NDLEA’s efforts to ensure that candidates are fit to hold public office and uphold the integrity of the elections.
