LG autonomy: We will enthrone accountability, prudence, people oriented government —– ALGON president

President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Aminu Muazu maifata said on Monday that local councils in the country would ensure accountability, prudent management of resources to bring development to the grassroots.
The ALGON president while fielding questions from Journalists in Lafia, Nasarawa state on Monday, explained that the development of the third tier of government would record transformation, development and people oriented administration.
Maifata who dispelled insinuations that corruption would be enthroned at the local councils, stated that Chairmen in the 774 local councils will work out template that would govern the conduct of local government in the management of resources,
“Nigerians overwhelming accepted and welcome the supreme court judgement so we will not have any justification for not delivering the benefit of the autonomy to our people”, ALGON president stated.
The ALGON president, who is also the incumbent Chairman of Lafia LG, further assured all that henceforth, all council chairmen across the country will do everything within their powers to deliver the dividends of democracy to their people.
According to Muazu, “Before the pronouncement of the Supreme Court, the autonomy clearly spelt out in the constitution, but the players were not allowing Nigerians to see the need for these autonomy”.
With this pronouncement by the Apex court we know that everybody has keyed into the judgement delivered. . Nigerians are now aware and waiting to see that the pronouncement of the Supreme Court becomes a reality.
He explained that the autonomy granted to the LGs would enhance democracy at the grassroots level across the country and empower local authorities to make decisions that would have positive impacts on the lives of their people.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts to ensure that local government councils begin to function properly as enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria
