Prank Gone Wrong as Unizik Graduate loses life

Ifunanya Miracle, a recent graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), has lost her life following a prank played on shortly after completing her degree.

Initially reported as a robbery, the circumstances surrounding her demise have since been clarified by Chief Ken Chukwurah, the Chief Safety Officer at UNIZIK.

According to Chukwurah, Ifunanya and another female student, residing off-campus, were preparing for their graduation clearance when the sad incident happened.

He said, they were accompanied by a male student in a tricycle (Keke), who made a jest suggesting he might take their phones.

In fear, the two girls leaped from the moving vehicle, where regrettably, Ifunanya sustained fatal head injuries upon impact with the road, while her friend, though injured, survived and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Dispelling initial rumors of a robbery, Chukwurah clarified that all involved parties were students.

The male student, whose identity remains undisclosed, responsibly accompanied the injured girls first to the University Medical Center and then to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, where Ifunanya tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Acting on his father’s advice, the young man voluntarily reported himself to the police.

In a bid to resolve the matter peacefully, both families convened at Chukwurah’s office. Ifunanya’s family expressed their desire not to pursue legal action but requested the male student’s family to cover burial expenses estimated at N450,000, with an additional N61,000 allocated for a family ritual. In a gesture of goodwill, the male student’s family agreed to a total payment of N950,000.

“The male student’s family has already remitted N500,000 to Ifunanya’s family. They have urged for the full settlement to swiftly resolve the police case, allowing them to focus on funeral arrangements,” Chukwurah affirmed. “We are relieved that both families have reached an amicable resolution.”

Currently, Ifunanya’s body rests in Awka’s mortuary and will be transported to Abia State once legal matters are settled.

A fellow student, Chioma, who was with Ifunanya on the day of the incident, reflected on the tragedy. “We were all looking forward to the future after our studies. Ifunanya’s POS business helped her make ends meet. It’s heartbreaking that a prank led to such a tragic outcome. Perhaps it was fate,” she said.
