Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national transition committee staged a dramatic protest at the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, demanding the immediate resignation of National Chairman Julius Abure, citing the expiration of his tenure.

The protest led by the acting chairman Aduwaheed Omar, the NLC committee arrived at the party’s headquarters amidst chants of solidarity and calls for leadership accountability.

Upon reaching the gates, security officials swiftly shut them, prompting a standoff.

In an attempt to gain entry, police deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters, who persisted in demanding access to the premises.

“The tenure of Julius Abure as Chairman has expired, and we are demanding his resignation,” declared Aduwaheed Omar, highlighting the committee’s stance on the issue.

Eyewitnesses noted the intensity of the demonstration, with protesters urging security personnel to “open the gate” amidst the commotion.

The incident reflects deep-seated tensions within the Labour Party, exacerbated by leadership disputes and organizational challenges.

The protest underscores broader concerns within the Nigerian labour movement, as stakeholders navigate issues of governance and representation within political structures.

As of now, there has been no official statement from Julius Abure or the Labour Party regarding the demands made by the NLC committee.
