FG Appeals for Understanding as Labour Rejects N60K Minimum Wage Offer

In a bid to address the ongoing negotiations surrounding the national minimum wage, the Federal Government has urged organized labor to exhibit understanding and patriotism following their rejection of the proposed N60,000 minimum wage offer.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mrs Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, conveyed the government’s plea in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja.

She emphasized the government’s dedication to prioritizing the well-being of all Nigerians, especially during the critical period of revitalizing the economy.

Onyejeocha highlighted the government’s consistency in taking steps towards securing a fair and realistic wage for Nigerian workers.

The rejection of the N60,000 proposed by the Tripartite Committee by organized labor stems from their argument that the amount falls short of providing a decent standard of living for workers.

They pointed out the disparity between the proposed wage and the rising cost of living, citing examples such as the inability to afford a bag of rice with the proposed wage.

Despite hours of intense negotiations, yesterday’s meeting between the government and labor ended in a deadlock, leading to its indefinite postponement. This impasse has raised concerns about the possibility of a nationwide strike if a reasonable agreement is not reached by May 31.

The government remains optimistic about the ongoing negotiations, expressing willingness to engage further with organized labor and other stakeholders to ensure inclusive and beneficial economic policies for all Nigerians.

However, the looming threat of a nationwide strike underscores the urgency for both parties to find common ground and resolve the issue amicably.
