A 15-year-old secondary school student identified as Ebube Offo has tragically ended his life by consuming a substance confirmed to be sniper insecticide.

Ebube, a resident of Ezeagu local government area of the state, reportedly took this extreme step after being expelled from his new school, Malex International School, located at No 2A, Niger Close Uwani Enugu.

Reports indicate that Ebube’s expulsion stemmed from his alleged poor performance at his former school, Evangel Secondary School, Achara Layout Enugu, which is owned by the Assemblies of God Church Nigeria.

He had previously been expelled during the second term of the ongoing 2024 academic session from Evangel Secondary School.

Following his expulsion from Evangel Secondary School, Ebube’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cosmos Offo, enrolled him in Malex International School. However, his enrollment was met with opposition when the principal of Evangel school intervened, alleging that Ebube was a negative influence. This intervention led to Ebube’s swift expulsion from Malex International School without any opportunity for observation or assessment.

Confirming the incident, Ebube’s elder brother, identified as Mr. Onyedika Offo, disclosed that the family is still reeling from the shock of Ebube’s untimely death, which occurred on Wednesday. Mr. Offo revealed that his brother had been battling depression following his suspension from Malex International School.

“It was because of the suspension his school gave him,” Mr. Offo lamented. “But instead of taking some time to monitor and watch if what the Evangel principal told them about my late brother were true, the management suspended him from the school, leading to him suffering depression.”

Prior to his death, family members, particularly their mother, had noticed concerning changes in Ebube’s behavior, including moodiness and unhappiness. Despite their inquiries, Ebube reassured them that all was well, concealing the internal turmoil he was experiencing.

Efforts to reach the management of both schools for comment proved futile, as they were unavailable during the weekend. Similarly, attempts to contact the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to inquiries on the matter.
